Ladies and gentlemen, there have only been three former presidents of M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. So let us start at the beginning. Yeah, Hitchhiking his way back home after a summer job, a young man awoke one morning in Georgia to see a brilliant, glowing hospital building that reflected pink in the morning sun. It was a spectacle never to be forgotten that P. Miller, an Arleigh Clark, vowed then and there one day to build a hospital with that same Georgia at a what? Surely it would be an inspiration. A call for hope, toe all who entered Clark was no idle dreamer. He was a big dreamer. His father had always advised him to make no small plans, and he took that advice to heart during his 32 year tenure as the first of only four presidents throughout the 75 year history of M. D. Anderson. Often, first thing one noticed upon entering Doctor Clark's office was a plaque on his desk with the words Make no small plans. He never did. We went home and had lunch that day, a little snack of black eyed peas and corn bread and buttermilk, which fit in very well with my Southern backgrounds, and we decide How can she be saw that day? Time magazine dubbed it the Pink Palace of healing, and though that building stood as a testament to his vision, it would be Dr Clarks. In 1978 after serving seven years as chancellor of the University of Texas system, Dr Charles A. Lemaitre took over the presidency. Mickey, as he liked to be called, was another visionary. At a time when the public focused on cancer research for treatment, Mickey would expand the nation's perspective to focus also on prevention, dedicated to finding a way to avoid cancer altogether. His focus on prevention garnered him the invitation to join the first U. S. Surgeon General's Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health with Mickey's help That committee in 1964 issued the nation's landmark report that identified cigarettes as a major health hazard. Mickey would go on to establish MD Anderson Cancer Prevention Program and develop it into the internationally recognized model for research and service initiatives to advance science and application of cancer prevention.
