I got about 20 ft from it and I still couldn't make out any more than the upper part of its face. But that was enough. I decided I wasn't going to get any closer and turned to head back. Turning my back to it was a mistake, though. As soon as I did, the thing came bounding out of the trees, pushing me to the ground. With its heavy growl, I could hear my family on the porch screaming and tear.
