The Spitfire was a British single seat fighter aircraft that captured the spirit of the Royal Air Force throughout the Second World War. With her distinctive sound, Spitfire continued to be used as a front line fighters into the 19 fifties. She was produced in greater numbers than any other British aircraft and was the only British fighter in production throughout the war. The Spitfire was designed by R. J. Mitchell of the Super Marine Aviation Works. Mitchell continued to refine the design until his untimely death from cancer in 1937 after which Joseph Smith became her chief designer.
