Chapter one. See it is widely known that cocaine is derived from the coca leaf, a plant that is native to South America and grows mostly in Colombia. Peru and Bolivia. It's been around for nearly 150 years now. Ever since its pain killing and mood lifting qualities were first identified because of fears about cocaine. The Harrison Act of 1914 and the Jones Miller Act of 1922 were passed and together they essentially prohibited cocaine, but that did not prevent people from utilizing it. Despite the crackdown, cocaine's domestic cultivation and flow from Peru was a big issue for the US, especially as Central America served as a conduit for drugs making their way to the US. Crack first surfaced in bigger cities in 1981. Although it was never widely seen until later though they didn't recognize this new rocklike material. The police discovered it was essentially cocaine or free base through chemical analysis rather than as the hydrochloride salt. More people began to follow the method as it became popular. It is assumed that mass production began in 1984 in Los Angeles. And this is when the first widespread usage of the technique was discovered. A common problem was that a 45% filler mixture was used to cut the cocaine. This may be any of the many ingredients used in baking, like powdered sugar or even illegal narcotics. Crack cocaine had a purity of roughly 80% and cost the same as it did to purchase it at the time. If they were previously dependent on cocaine, they take an identical amount of crack and they'd likely overdose which caused a dramatic increase in the number of cocaine related admissions. Crack was also made far more versatile which made it possible to evaporate it at 100 and 94 F rather than the much higher temperature required. In the past. This isn't quite boiling yet. Cocaine hydrochloride in powder form melts around 370 degrees Fahrenheit. Therefore, even if it vaporized, the process will be exceedingly risky due to the proximity to burning Gerald left the front of his classroom and sat down in his chair at the back of the row. His teacher was lost for words. Well, class, I think we should give Gerald a round of applause for that great report. He wrote about his neighborhood. The Children in the classroom began to clap it irritated young ji to get the attention from the class he was getting, he had set out to make a statement to his peers. But his teachers seemed to only sweep the issues that he and his close friends were living in under the rug. The bell rang, bringing g out of his deep thoughts. The Children got up and started out of the classroom. So tomorrow we will pick up where we left off on your neighborhood reports. If you haven't already completed yours, make sure it's done tonight. You will not know who I will be calling to the front next to read theirs. The young teacher advised, hey, Gerald, come here for a second. The teacher asked. Yes, ma'am. The young kid replied walking up. That was a very interesting report that you did. Are you having any problems at home that you need to talk to someone about? No, ma'am. Everything is fine. I just got promoted to manager at the detail shop and I'm about to save up to buy my first car. Everything is great, Miss Jones. Why do you ask? Well, I also noticed that you seem not to be here when class is going on. It's like you are in a different world or something. Really? I promise you everything is fine. She shot the teacher a wide grin. Congratulations on your promotion. Gerald. I know you will do great things in the world. I will see you tomorrow. Ok. She patted him on the back as he walked out. Yo, g wait up. A young man's voice shouted as G walked out the classroom. Yo, what up, Kev? It was Kevin G's best friend from childhood. What the **** you and Miss Jones got going. Kevin asked, attempting to irritate his friend. What do you mean what we got going on? She asked me about my report. Yeah, it was dope. You told the truth on that baby, but I don't know why you made it look like the dealer was a bad guy. ****. You know what *** gotta do out here to get their paper, right? The two young men had made it outside of the school and were standing on the steps. G stopped in his tracks and turned to Kevin. What the **** are you talking about? Are you trying to say them *** who out here slinging are heroes? What the **** are you talking about? I'm saying in these days a *** gotta do what a *** gotta do. Kevin pulled out a fat wad of money and waved it in G's face. What the, where did you get that at? The tooth fairy ************? G just stared at Kevin ***. I got all this from slanging. I made this in one night. Kevin quickly thumbed through the notes. It seemed to g that it would never end as he counted and they were all $20 bills. I know you ain't out here ******* with this rock ****. Kevin, your daddy doing the beer right now for the same **** that *** was smoking too. He didn't know what side to be on. You saw the movie? Don't get high on your own supply. I sell it. I don't smoke it. I'm about to cop me a ride today. Like right now that *** Callie gonna sell me his cutlass and leave the beat in it for me too. How many cars you gotta wash to buy a whip? I did this in one night. G it's a no brainer. They continued to walk down the sidewalk towards the hood as Kevin ran his plans down to G about his newfound profession. As G listened, it sickened him to hear how his friend had chosen the side of his people's destruction. When they stopped walking, they were in front of the place where Kevin was to meet and purchase his new ride. Hey, hang tight right here. I'm gonna run over there and get this up off my dude real quick. G dropped his head. When Kevin walked away, he turned back around and noticed a blank look on his homeboy's face. Hey dog, cheer the **** up. This is the last time *** like us ever going to have to walk around this *****. I got you, ok? I'll be right back not feeling the celebratory spirit as Kevin did G made his way to work. When he arrived, he put his uniform shirt on and began his shift at the detail shop. He sat at a desk near the front entrance and watched the guys across the street. Three guys dressed in Karl Kanai outfits stood in front of a shabby convenience store. One of them was posted up next to a pay phone. Another walked back and forth to each corner of the store. Then the third guy stood a little closer to the street. They were working as a team to sell crack cocaine.
