Chapter one, Woolworth's history narration. One for generations, people have walked these aisles in search of a cure to quench their thirst. Commemorate a trip or find the perfect something to make a loved one smile, young and old locals and visitors, everyone can find exactly what they're looking for. If they let their feet carry them through a little piece of history. And down the right aisle five and Dime General Store represents the past, the virtues and values. We look back on as something that was better with the nostalgia of things we've lost over the decades since the advent of Woolworths as the first consumer direct shopping experience in the 18 seventies to the consumer products, boom of the thirties to the fifties and sixties when pre packaged goods became household staples. Stores like five and dime have held a special place in the hearts and minds of everyday Americans. Woolworths opened on the Santa Fe Plaza in 1935. A place for everything. Woolworths offered a hot meal clothes, necessities and non perishables for customers of all ages and incomes. The F W Woolworth company first opened in February 18 79 in Central New York State. Woolworth's great five cent store was a general merchandise. The first of its kind where customers could browse and choose merchandise from open shelves with a popular inventory of items that cost a nickel or a dime. While not initially successful, Woolworths came to be a pioneer in merchandizing direct purchasing sales and customer centered service, developing practices for success that are commonly used in today's retail stores.
