Steven. I left surface to travel north because our new girlfriends were going backto work in Brisbane. We drive 400 malls to Gladstone with a feeling of adventure. I suppose we expected to find another surface paradise. We chose Gladstone because we could get a ferry to Heron Island, which is at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. There was nowhere to stay. We slept in the car and woke up at 6 30 feeling dusty and demoralised. We couldn't get a ferry to Heron Island, so he took one to Curtis Island seemed to be inhabited by about 30 people. I was made even clear by the ramshackle nature of the houses on the side of a couple of trucks standing back to the 19 forties, parked on the beach in another life, everything that would have seemed quite and charming.
