Over the last roughly 10,000 years, civilizations have emerged in many parts of our globe Africa, Asia, South America and most relevant for me Europe. Around the rim of the Mediterranean Sea, Mesopotamian, Greek, Roman and Egyptian civilizations emerged, developed and like Carthage, some disappeared. DNA analysis, courtesy of the organisation ancestry tells me my heritage is about half Irish, one quarter Scandinavian and the rest a mix of British, Spanish and a few other bits integral to these emergent civilisations was the emergence of religions. When we humans observe something puzzling or frightening, which we cannot understand, predict or control rather than accept it per se, we invent the existence of gods, to whom we ascribe the power of control. Typically the bureaucracy which grows up around the interpretation of the way these gods interact with humans. Religion becomes an end in itself, and its protagonists influence other components of a civilisation in the name of religion.
