To help our brains remain sharp, it pays to keep them busy through what's known as cognitive training, cognition being the scientific word for our mental processes. This can take many forms for example, learning abstract lists of words as a way of exercising our memories in much the same way as we would exercise a muscle. And it has been shown that this can actually lead to physical changes in the brain. One German experiment found that six months of memory training in a group of people with an average age of 69 led to strengthened nerve connections between the right and left hemispheres. Similarly, American research demonstrated that eight weeks of cognitive training with a group of people who were also aged around 70 brought about an increase in blood flow to the prefrontal cortex, which, as we've already seen, plays a vital role in the storage and retrieval of information
