I remember we was eating breakfast when we heard a bunch of riders coming into the yard, pa got up and walked out onto the porch just as the riders pulled up. I remember hearing papa saying, What you doing here Hastings, I told you not to come around here again. Now you and your boys clear out before I get my scatter gun and air out. Your innards, mama and me moved to the window and was looking out when pa said those things. Well sir, I reckon paul must have been paying attention to Hastings or something because we heard a crack that sounded like a whip and the next thing we note paul was in the dirt grasping at his neck. Mama had to stuff her fist in her mouth to keep from screaming. Then she turned and grabbed me by the shoulders and quietly but urgently said, Run Logan, Go find you a hiding place and stay there till they're gone. Run. Don't look back and don't make a sound now go! She pushed me toward the back door and I ran out, but I didn't go far. I found me a hiding place back behind the chicken coop. I figured I could see what was going on without them knowing I was there and I'm sorry I did. No sooner was I out the back door as mama went out the front door as she rushed out onto the porch, the whip cracked again this time across paws face, he screamed and so did mama. She ran to his side while the men got off their horses and two of them grabbed her, she screamed and slapped one of them. When pa saw him hitting her back, he tried to get up, but the man with the whip took his legs out from under him. Then two of them grabbed hold of pause arms and bodily lifted him up and made him look toward Hastings. You should have left when you had the chance chambers now it's too late. The two men who had hold a paw dragged him to the door of the barn and strung him up with the rope holding his arms out like that statue of jesus on the cross that's hanging in the church. That's when the man with the whip really began wailing on him lash. After lash landed on his back and it weren't too long till he just hung there all limp. And that's when I heard mama screaming from inside the house. Hastings called out, Kirby you and luke. Leave some for the rest of us, no promises. Mr Hastings, a man's voice called out, his mama screamed again. Then Hastings turned his attention to the man with the whip, Jonah, that's enough, we don't want to kill him too quickly, barney you and Orrin let him down, let him rest a bit before Jose gets his turn, pa dropped to the ground as soon as they release the ropes, it weren't long before he started trying to get up and that's when that Jose fella started paul had just gotten to his feet shaking and teetering like he was gonna fall over when Jose lassoed him, A four paw could pull the rope off that Jose fella pulled it tight and tied it around the saddle horn and began pulling paul around the yard. At first he just walked his horse and pa, still staggering, was able to keep up, but then he started going faster and pa had to try to run. After the second lap around the yard, pa stumbled and fell. He was still holding onto the rope as Jose began loping around the yard, pulling paw behind. It was horrible to watch pa being dragged behind that horse every time Jose turned, paul would roll and roll, sometimes ending up on his back and sometimes ending up on his stomach. After about 10 minutes or so of this Hastings called out, let him loose Jose, give someone else a turn, Jose smiled and said seizing your Hastings as he dropped the rope and pa slid to a stop
