well. Two year long investigation leads Arizona authorities to a drug smuggling ring conducted in part by UPS workers. What America's Morrison Gonzales has that story. 11 suspects, including four UPS employees, have been taken into custody over the past two weeks and connection with the Tucson, Arizona, drug smuggling scheme coordinated with the delivery service, according to police. The group started off shipping marijuana and UPS packages, but search warrants eventually led to the seizure of more than 50,000 counterfeit Vape pens containing THC. Now former UPS supervisors 49 year old Mario Barcelo and 40 year olds Gary Love were arrested, and police said they used to their authority to make sure planted packages would not be inspected. UPS drivers Michael Castro and Thomas Mendoza were also taken into custody. While you're here talking to me, there may be a package being delivered to your house today, and if you manage to find it and bring it in the house, a drug trafficker doesn't interdict it, get it themselves before you get it, maybe do a home invasion on you to get it, police said. The probe began in 2017 when Homeland Security first learned of shipping patterns that signaled the possible scheme. Undercover officers acted as drug traffickers to contact the alleged ringleader, UPS Supervisor Barcelo, to ship fake cocaine between 2018 and 2019. The officers placed trackers onto the boxes being shipped and tap. The UPS employees phones to capture video footage of loading and shipping of the fake packages. The nail in the coffin for the smuggling ring was the raid on 47 year old Raoul Cordova's home, which is where the Vape pens were seized. Officers said. Even though drug trafficking may continue at the local level, it lessens the risk of an innocent person unknowingly becoming involved if a drug filled package was accidentally shipped to them. If we take shipping out of the equation on people, move back to the highways in the Arizona Department of Public Safety is an incredible IT addict er on the highways there feared by drug traffickers across the country because of the effectiveness of their operation here. So I would rather have them moving on the highways and ship it. According to police. Some of those in custody had been involved in multiple drug cartels for more than a decade. The suspects are each facing a slew of charges, including money laundering, drug distribution and drug possession. Marisa Gonzalez one America News Want to see more videos like this?
