Glasgow, they call it no mean city. And with good reason as the 18 year old Edwin Collins is about to find out it's Christmas 1978 and his plucky band of Bears. Den punks, the new Sonics have been booked to support local wannabes, the backstabbers in the suburb of Mary Hill. Unlike in Edinburgh punk gigs in Glasgow are scarce for two very good reasons. Firstly, a lack of venues due to the city's ARCA and licensing laws which forced most touring bands out to the adjoining town of Paisley. And secondly, because your average Glaswegian's tolerance for punk rock is less than zero. Just ask the clash who six months earlier played a gig at the local Apollo which ended in Joe Strummer's arrest and the mauling of innocent pole goers by the venue's barbaric security and it's all about to kick off again at Mary Hill tonight.
