These NFL players almost died. The NFL has experienced plenty of heart stopping situations from deadly hits to life threatening injuries. In this video, we will examine some of the most terrifying hits and incidents in NFL history in greater detail as well as how they affected the game. At number four is Ryan Shazier who used to play linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Ryan Shazier was shaping up to be one of the best linebackers in the NFL. He was fast, strong aggressive and could cover but all of a sudden one play changed it all. Shazier suffered a severe spinal cord injury while making a tackle back in December of 2017 during a Monday night football game against the Cincinnati Bengals in a normal routine play. Ryan drops back into his zone sees a crosser and comes up to make a usually easy open field tackle. Unfortunately, the injury he would suffer would not be routine as he laid on the field, he immediately grabbed his back and called for assistance. After that, he was taken to a local hospital where he underwent spinal stabilization surgery which involved joining two of his vertebrae to stabilize the injured area. Shazier underwent extensive rehabilitation in the days and weeks that followed, including physical therapy and other procedures to regain his strength and mobility. He started to feel his legs again and eventually picked up a cane to help him walk Shazier upbeat outlook and perseverance. Throughout his recovery served as motivation and inspiration for many people, including his teammates and supporters who saw him as a symbol of resiliency and hope to shed some light on the situation. Shazier did make amazing progress. He even made an appearance the following year at the NFL draft. The audience applauded Shazier when he entered the stage at the NFL draft in April of 2018 to announce the steelers' first round selection due to the seriousness of his injury, Shazier will never be able to play football again, but he continued to serve the Steelers organization in a scouting capacity. He made his intention to pursue a career in coaching known when he officially announced his retirement from the NFL in 2021 a supporter of spinal cord injury research, Shazier established the Ryan Shazier Fund for spinal rehabilitation to help those who have experienced a similar injury. At number three, we have former tight end Kevin Everett who played for the Buffalo. Bills. Everett was a monster went on the field. However, one day while running down the field on kickoff, Everett sustained a potentially fatal spinal cord injury in 2007 while making a tackle against the Denver Broncos. He hit the ball carrier head on and immediately buckled underneath his legs. There was no time to waste and he was taken to the hospital right away where emergency surgery was done to stabilize his spine. Everett had a very slim chance of ever walking again because at first he was unable to move any of his limbs and was unable to breathe on his own. However, Everett was moved to a specialized hospital in Houston where he underwent a difficult procedure in which medical professionals cooled down his body temperature and reduced swelling in his spinal cord. Using ice cold saline hypothermia therapy has been used in some spinal cord injury cases to lessen the severity of the damage to the spinal cord and improve recovery prospects. Everett's surgery was successful in reducing the swelling in his spinal cord and stabilizing his spine. Everett underwent extensive surgery and then he started a protracted and demanding rehabilitation process that involved physical therapy, occupational therapy and other types of care. He was able to breathe and move his limbs on his own again. Slowly but surely beginning with tiny finger and toe movements. He eventually advanced to standing up and using a walker to walk less than a year after his injury. In 2008, he was able to enter Ralph Wilson stadium, the Buffalo Bills Home Stadium to accept the team's 2007 Ed block Courage award. Everett's injury raised awareness of the problem of spinal cord injuries in football and prompted more efforts to increase player safety including alterations to the rules regarding tackling and equipment requirements. Since then, he has worked as an advocate for research into spinal cord injuries and published a book about his experiences called Standing Tall the Kevin Everett story, DEMAR Hamlin a safety for the Buffalo Bills comes in at number two. This happens to be the most recent story that we remember as it just happened last year, Hamlin tackled Bengals receiver T Higgins during the first quarter of the football game in Cincinnati got up and shortly after he got up, he fell right back down to the ground. Hamlin's heart literally stopped on the field and at one point, people will say DEMAR was dead despite receiving CPR in the field to help him survive. A cardiac arrest. Hamlin was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The fact that nobody knew if he was going to live or not, the game even had to be canceled and not be rescheduled instead of the usual scores and highlights. Fans looked to ESPN the game's broadcaster for updates on Hamlin's condition. The announcer Joe Buck called the incident a nightmare and emphasized that in the face of such a terrifying injury. Football lost all meeting he was discharged from the hospital following evaluation through a series of thorough medical tests including cardiac neurological and vascular examinations. In January of this year, Hamlin made a public appearance at the Bills AFC divisional round game against the Bengals where some people actually say he was a clone, who knows? Right. And after that, he also shared a video on social media, thanking everyone who had helped him to get better. Hamlet is recovering faster than expected, but he still needs different kinds of therapy and professional care. His doctors declined to make any assumptions about how far he is from getting back to his regular life as he recovers. They added it would be a long time before they discussed Hamilton's ability to play football again, but it sounds like he is making a return sooner than we thought. At number one on the list. We're taken at old school and have Darryl Stingley from 1973 to 1977. The New England Patriots had a gifted wide receiver named Darryl Stingley. Stingley was hard to cover and making noise is a huge wide receiver, but Stingley took a devastating blow from Raiders defensive back, Jack Tatum in 1978 in a preseason game against the Oakland Raiders as he was running a quick slant. Stingley had jumped to catch a pass from quarterback Steve groin when he technically got his head knocked off. Stingley and Tatum collided in the air and tatum struck him in the chest with his helmet. Stingley was paralyzed from the neck down as a result of a spinal cord injury from the hip that fractured his 4th and 5th cervical vertebrae. Stingley underwent several surgeries after being taken to the hospital in a hurry but he was never able to regain movement below the neck. Highly emotional and divisive events followed the hit. Some claim that the hit was just a normal part of the game while others blamed Tatum for the injury. The Stingley family filed a lawsuit against Tatum in 1981 but there was no trial. Stingley kept up with football and the Patriots organization despite suffering a terrible injury. In addition to becoming a well like Patriots fan, he developed into a motivational speaker, heart disease, probably a side effect of Sting's quadriplegia claimed his life in 2007. At the age of 55 the hit on Stingley had a major influence on the NFL and how the game was conducted. It sparked a flurry of debate about player safety and resulted in the adoption of new laws and rules that guard players against harmful hits. The incident brought to light the necessity of more effective medical attention and rehabilitation programs for injured athletes.
