I used to stay home and rely on my husband to support our family. He was away a lot in the city, working on businesses that were not very profitable or reliable. We lived in this small mud house with four of us sleeping in one room. We had no money and no hope for the future. In 2019 everything changed. When I met Gladys from the Salvation Army's worth project. She told me the project is about empowering women through teaching business banking and literacy skills to be leaders and social entrepreneurs in our communities. All members of the group contribute to the group savings and can take out small loans which are repaid with interest. Then when everyone has repaid their loans, we divide the profits and each take our share with my first loan. I was able to pay for my Children's school fees. I started growing my own fruits and vegetables Which I sell at a market stall through the Salvation Army. I have also learned to read and write from the shares I received from worth. I was able to buy materials to build a larger brick house, piece by piece. My husband and I built this together. We are so proud, I thankfully started with worth before the COVID-19 pandemic. So we had our own vegetables to eat. When travel was limited as my husband was not able to travel to the city to work, we were able to live off the food with you. The Worth project has been operating now for over 10 years and has benefited thousands of Kenyan women like me The group I am a part of at the Worth Project is named Vision Ladies. We like to say that we are building a better future. We have 35 members and together we have the biggest savings pool in the history of the worth program. Through the worth program. I now have a stable income, improved housing and can give my Children a better education. Next I plan to buy a motorbike so I can carry more goods to sell. I go to church and thank God for all I have. I encourage all women in the community to join these projects. I tell them the Salvation Army loves God and loves the community. I would like to thank everyone who has supported this project. I have achieved more than I ever thought possible.
