Chapter one Hot Flashes today started out like any other day for Jana. She woke up to her mother not being home because she left at six o'clock in the morning, Cold breakfast was laid out on the table for her and her brother, Darius, thinking to herself about how she had no idea what to wear to school, which was usually the norm for her. She started her day with her skincare routine. She felt this was a tremendous importance due to the poor quality of skin she had inherited from her Uncle Earl, according to her mother, Nettie. Nevertheless, mixing her morning mass together to help rid her face of all the small colonies of acne and acne scars that always seemed toe pop up out of nowhere, she grabs some tumeric. Raul honey and lemon juice from the kitchen, made her acne cocktail, as she liked to call it, and spread the paste concoction over what was beginning to look like an unfinished game of connecting the dots on her forehead. Janay never allowed herself much time to feel self conscious about her bag skin flares because she knew within a week the colonization of flares would die down and her melanin would be back to glowing again. She brushed her teeth, rinsed off the tumeric facial mask and sprayed a finner, Greek and alot mixture into her hair from the roots to tips pulling her thick and coarse coils up into a high bun. Laying her baby hairs down with edge control and the toothbrush, Janay took pride in her natural, thick head of hair and had always preferred simple looks that took five minutes or less to achieve. Most days, she relied on Ah, High Bun, which was her signature look, and go to style preference except for on some special occasions.
