Stanley had the bad luck to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, innocent of the crime. He was not a bad kid. He smiled at the thought of his rotten no good sock stealing great great grandfather. This was all his doing. The family joke was to blame anything that ever went wrong on their rotten, no good sock stealing great great grandfather. The story was, he had stolen some livestock from a one legged gypsy who put a curse on him and all his family thereafter. It wasn't true, of course, but when things went wrong as they often did, it seemed logical to fix the blame somewhere. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time happened a lot.
