“It’ll put hair on your chest”, Duane said, passing the cup to Michael. He had heard the same thing about brussel sprouts, and despite eating a couple dozen of the nasty vinegar-soaked buds, Michael’s chest was as bald as the top of Grandpa’s head.

Duane lifted the cup again slightly, offering the black coffee to Michael. He took the Thermos cup merely for the heat the drink might offer his body, and the short break it would give him from the morning’s labor. It was 18 degrees at 8 AM and it would be noon before the temperature climbed to the freezing point.

Michael cradled the hot beverage in his hand and drank slowly. He knew this may well be the only break he got until all of the wood was loaded into the back of the truck, and everyone had piled in amongst the firewood for the bumpy ride home.

Michael glanced at Duane, sitting somewhat anxiously in the front of the old Chevrolet pickup. He was fairly certain this would be the only time he and his father would have alone today. And along with the coffee, he drank it in.
