by the mid 19th century. While the colonisation of Australia was well underway, the interior of the country was still viewed as a formidable place, traversed rarely and with great difficulty. The opening up of Australia's great inland area was essential to the growth of industry and the population, but it posed a significant problem as the great expanses, extreme temperatures and vast, waterless stretches were unlike what many colonisers had experienced before. After the success of the Burke and Wills expedition, which included 26 of the first camels to be brought into the country, the idea of using camels instead of horses or oxen became increasingly popular. But few people knew how to train, careful and travel with the animals quickly. A solution was found to bring not only camels to the country, but the Afghan Camilli is that worked with them.
