Winter should be over but spring had not yet arrived. Anne felt ancient as she knelt on the cold ground. She rubbed her back as she slowly rose to her feet. The ground was still frozen. It was traditional to start seedlings in April and though the winters were longer and harsher than ever, she believed that the earth would welcome new life in its usual course. It was early morning. Her feet felt numb and her fingers chilled. The gray sky hinted at coming snow. Oh, God, surely we'll get one more spring, won't we? She hated to beg, but she could not help the small strangled pleas that followed. April was too early to start anything. This year. She would have to wait and start her seedlings next month, tend them carefully and then by late may or perhaps early June, the ground would be ready. It was not much of a difference. The plants would still have enough time to grow. Well, they always did. Even Philip admired her green thumb. He would walk out occasionally in the still warm evenings and comment. Your garden's not much to look at, but boy, it sure does produce Anne smiled, rely at the recollection. There were so few things she and Philip could talk about these days. Most often they seem to merely pass each other with barely a word or a nod.
