Winter should be over but spring had not yet arrived. Anne felt ancient as she knelt on the cold ground. She rubbed her back as she slowly rose to her feet. The ground was still frozen. It was traditional to start seedlings in April and though the winters were longer and harsher than ever, she believed that the earth would welcome new life in its usual course. It was early morning.
