closing my eyes and exhaling deeply, I leaned against the hardback rest and surrendered to the sounds and images that had come flooding back all afternoon. I saw Bob even more fresh faced and younger, looking than his son, Eric, now pacing the dirt floor in our hooch in the deepening twilight of the tropics, he was belting out the song lyrics along with Peter, Paul and Mary, tapping his feet to the rhythm while struggling to stay on key as he imagined himself, cradling his newborn son in his arms and singing him to sleep. The son he had never got to hold and had only known through pictures from home, and I found myself smiling than joining in, nodding and softly humming along with my hooch mate. As my lips registered, the warm and salty taste of tears puff the magic dragon lift by the sea and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called on early like a wound that is closed and healing. The little red dragon from the far away land was finally coming full circle to its intended home after three long decades, and that, to me, was nothing short of magic.
