Mellie was a homeless puppy living in a big city. She was born into a pack of stray dogs that knew their way around the city, and for the most part didn't mind being homeless. The older dogs showed Meli how to get down to the river for a drink of water. They took her to an alley behind some shops where the dogs rummaged through the garbage cans and begged for bones from a butcher. At night, they welcomed Mellie into the center of the dog pile, which kept all of them warm until morning. Mellie didn't hear the older dogs complain, but she didn't think the homeless life was so great. The river's waters okay for drinking, she thought, but rummaging through smelly garbage cans and sleeping in a pile of dusty, grimy dogs is not okay. I know they're my friends, but these dogs stink Mellie thought so, Mellie started wriggling out of the dog pile early in the morning and sneaking down to the river to take a quick bath in the cool water. Now, when the pack went to the alley behind the shops, Millie offered to stand as a look out for the dog catcher while the others rummaged through the garbage cans, the other dogs through scraps down to Mellie, so she got to eat without getting dirty.
