Alcohol, tinctures, glycerides, teas and decoction can be used topically, liniments, liniments are made in the same way as macerated tinctures but with rubbing alcohol instead of drinkable ethanol, this cuts down on cost. It also makes the liniment toxic for internal use. Many use regular alcohol tinctures topically as liniments to avoid the risk of poisoning. Label liniments that are made with rubbing alcohol to prevent accidental ingestion, menthol crystals or wintergreen, add a nice smell, increase the anti inflammatory properties of the liniment and help prevent accidental ingestion. The anti spasmodic tincture in chapter 12 makes a good liniment compresses and fermentations. A compress is a cloth pad soaked in an herbal extract and applied to the skin. Most compresses are applied warm but cold compresses have their applications. Compresses are used to ease pain or accelerate the healing of wounds or muscle injuries. Cold compresses are used for headaches, burns, bites and stings, infusions, decoction and tinctures or glycerides diluted with water may be used for a compress. The pad may be soft cotton or linen, a cotton ball or woven gauze to prepare a compress, submerge a clean piece of soft cloth in a warm infusion or other herbal extract, squeeze out the excess liquid, place the pad against the affected area when the pad cools or dries repeat the process.
