What do you call? 5000 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean, a good start now. This is not a call to violence against lawyers, so please don't sue us. But let's be honest lawyers are not a popular bunch, at least this portrayed in pop culture. They're vultures and their practice comes off as dry and personal and needlessly Byzantine. But if your service provider, you actually have more in common with a law firm than you might think we know our parent company does. You both essentially sell people's time and their experience. And people are complicated. We each have personal goals and we all have personal relationships that impact our professional lives and how we serve clients, starting a service business, whether it's a clinic and agency or a law firm is almost never done with the intention of selling the business. And while there are some exceptions, most service industry companies here never create traditional corporate structures, let alone plan for an exit. Now, here in Egypt law firms have evolved into a peculiar beast. The practices centered around cults of personality and there isn't an accepted model for compensation or building the business is cutthroat and individualistic and the ultimate sign of success is having your name written on the wall. Today, we explore these common challenges with Dr Aladin, A professor of law and a practicing lawyer who in 2003, established Aladin and Partners, a firm that specializes in corporate law and provides counsel to major national and global institutions. In this reflection on the service industry at large, we take a broader look at how in a country of 100 million people where most people work in services, service providers hardly ever lobby for their interests. We also discuss the dynamics of attracting the right talent and creating a culture that keeps them on board for the long haul, as well as the challenges facing leaders who need to distance themselves from day to day work and focus on building a people business. Here's speaking to Patrick, Enterprises editor in chief and co host of making it.
