Robert Tess and Mary had pursued all together different paths and claimed the matter had been settled long ago while I was still in France. Friends kept asking me all the time. Are you sure about this move? Aren't you afraid? In truth? I was. But in my heart I knew I had to leave that staying was impossible or so I'd thought at the time.
