Bobby ross has a knack for turning lemons into lemonade after barry Sanders left. The Detroit. Lions were written office cellar dwellers with the addition of Gus Frerotte and Desmond Howard Detroit enjoys an eight and four record. The Lions coach has taken these players off the waiver wire and lead them to the top of the NFC center every now and then a fresh environment is good for people. And uh, and I think that's exactly what happened with us now. You know, the key to it, although it's sustaining and that's true for them as well as for us, Ross says fate isn't necessarily on the Lions side, but good luck will happen from time to time. Two examples come to mind on 4th and 28 for Rod hit jermaine crowd for 57 yards against ST louis. The drive would result in the winning touchdown in a 31 27 win over the rams Howard dazzled the crowd at the Pontiac Silverdome with a 68 yard punt return in last week's 33 17 win over Washington a day earlier, the Lions signed him after being dropped by Green Bay. I've had situations in other games where things have gone away from us, you know, and gone the other way. So I think over the course of the season, but it pretty well balances out. I want to deny the fact that you know, for you to really get to where you want to be and I don't care who you are, you gotta hit some luck and and obviously we've had some of that happened to us. The Lions finished the 1998 season five and 11 not making for a very happy coach Ross knew that he had to become the person he used to be for the Lions to improve in 1999. I've always been a person that believes and positive reinforcement I really have. And of course it's easier when you're winning. But maybe last year perhaps, uh, you know, I would have to say that that maybe I got a little bit away from that from time to time and I didn't feel comfortable doing that. So I went back to doing it the way that I would like to do it in the post Sanders era was touted as a living nightmare, the great unknown, but the lines have proved that they can win for themselves and not just to make a point. I think we dealt with it the first day of camp and I think that's been put aside long ago. I really do. I think that and you know, the idea, well, are they plan to try to prove something? I think maybe that was true for the first game, but I think that's over with now. I think we're just, you know, we're just playing and trying to win for the sake of winning the Lion's traveled to Tampa on sunday to take on the bucks. Mark evangelista Houston Chronicle dot com
