Description

This is an actual reading of my Great Grandfather, Horace Smith's Civil War diary. He joined the 2nd NH Regiment in 1861 and while serving kept a diary of his time as a Union soldier. I am hoping to transcribe the whole diary into an audiobook.

A civil war journal. By Horace Ober Smith, I belong to the second New Hampshire regiment. I enlisted in Exeter May 4th with 11 others from South Newmarket. We stayed there three weeks living in high style drilling three hours a day. And the rest of the time we spent rolling 10 pins and driving fast horses. On the 25th, we went to Portsmouth which was the rendezvous for the regiment with about 50 others. We did not have so much liberty there to go around for as soon as we got to our quarters, we couldn't go out by day and the guard was there and you needed a pass. It became very hard at first. But after a while, we got used to it after we had been in Portsmouth about a week, we was put into a company commanded by Captain Leonard. Draw, he's a good officer. And I think if the men use him well, he will do the same to them but woe to the man who disobeys orders or he will show them no mercy.
