Will felt Jay give his arm a little tug and saw her shadow move away from the landing balustrades towards the rear stairs. He could see beam number two start to climb the staircase as the light rose and steadied as it took each step upwards, will sensed Jay moving. And as he turned towards her, reflected from the intruder's torch was a glint of metal. She whispered time, I think. And then a bright light burst open the hall followed by a crack of a pistol in Jay's hand that reverberated through the empty landing. Jay pulled will back further towards the rear stairs. The running of feet broke a brief silence and beam. Number one arrived in the hall, if the, that's how you want to plead to and then another flash and bang from beam. Number one, come on, whispered, Jay. Let's get to the backstairs. He is still echoing from the noise of the shots and his heart jumping around in his chest. Well, scuttled across the landing after Jay he could, his steps approaching up the main staircase. So as quickly and quietly as they could, they descended the backstairs and edged into the passageway that led to the hall. The hall was now dark as both beams had gone up the main stairs. The front door will whispered to Jay. Yes. Was a reply. It wasn't easy to see anything in London. There will be some illumination from outside. Here, there was just darkness and more darkness will could feel Jay close to him and he sensed she was urging him forward. He didn't think he could risk the torch. So we tried to pitch the route to the front door and what obstacles might be in the way. They were building materials everywhere. What was in the hall will couldn't remember exactly keeping his back to the wall. He slid along using his leading leg to feel for any obstacles. There was the sound of doors being thrown open from upstairs and then footsteps proceeding along the landing. It wouldn't be long before the beams find the other flight of stairs will hustled towards the front door at the corner of the hall. His feet caught the edge of a metal ladder that fell flat, its metallic ringing indicating their location there down there came a voice from the landing as one of the beams made its way back to the top of the main stairs. They're trying to escape as a shot crashed into the front door. Will saw Jay aim her pistol at the torch on the stairs and pulled the trigger. The torch didn't fall just seemed to jump to one side will whispered to Jay. Come on, can't go through the front door. It has to be the tunnel as he maneuvered Jay through the door to the billiard room behind him, will heard a crash and then a series of thumps down the stairs followed by raised voices. It sounded like the builder materials had successfully booby trapped the stairs and at least one of the torches had fallen, risking his own torch will and Jay made their way around the billiard table to the panel in the wall will wasted precious seconds. As he tried to locate the switch mechanism, he could sense the beams were getting nearer all the time. Get in. He mowed to Jay as the panel door swung open and Jay disappeared into the darkness. Will was just trying to pull the panel door closed behind them. When one of the beams appeared at the billiard room door, he's over there. The beam shouted, Will left the panel door open and chased after Jay. He could see the shadowy movement of Jay's torch in front of him and called out behind you. Keep moving. He thought about turning on the lights to illuminate the tunnel but decided against it. They had a slight advantage of the pursuers as they knew where they were heading. The uneven floor made progress hazardous even with torches as will rounded a bend in the tunnel. He saw Jay stumble to the ground but was up as quickly as she had fallen and was away again, the rough wall acted like sandpaper on Will's hand as he used his outstretched arm to keep balance his feet, twisting and turning on the uneven floor. He could now see lights behind him. The beams were in the tunnel. He tried to estimate how much further it was to the end at the end of a longish straight stretch of the tunnel, something whistled past Will's head, followed by a loud bang and debris bouncing off the wall. Ears ringing, well, ducked, almost losing his footing before he rounded another bend and refuge for a while. He tried to increase his speed, but he couldn't afford to trip and fall. The soles of his feet and toes ached from the bruising of the floor. Ragged breaths emerged from his raw and rasping lungs. His legs were shaking as every muscle and sine cried out for rest. His chest tightened as panic crept through him like an invisible enemy around another bend. And then up ahead, he saw Jay placing the ladder against the end wall behind him. He heard a clattering followed by several expletives. As one or both of the beams must have fallen. He could see Jay gliding up the ladder, torching her mouth and hand out, stretched as she reached the top to push open the hatch will hoped she had enough strength as otherwise. They were both dead.
