It was the smell that I noticed first, Ah, thick channel stench that evoked a childhood memory. My friends and I had found a dead cat in the woods behind my house. One of my friends had prodded the animal's corpse with a stick until the felines body split open, spilling a wriggling mass of white bloated maggots onto the dark earth. The smell of sailing my nostrils was the same sickly sweet stink of corruption that had billowed from the cat but magnified a thousandfold. My mind swam with confusion, thoughts sluggish as if I'd bean drugged. I tried to remember where I was and failing that tried to go back to the basics. Who was? I, I didn't know, couldn't even remember my name. The memories as ethereal and insubstantial smoke dissipating into nothing. As soon as I tried to grasp hold of them, I fought through the mind fog and tried to focus on the memory fragment that I did have that hot summer has a young boy. When I'd experienced the raw reality of death for the first time. What had I being cold? What were the names of my friends? I've replayed the scene in my mind. But now, when I tried to visualise the faces of my companions, all I saw were blank, featureless masks of unblemished flesh framed with tussled hair. I tried to open my eyes, but found that my eyelids were stuck together and the effort simply made them water.
