it's national banana split day and I hate to be the one to break it to you. But just because there's a banana in? It doesn't mean it's healthy. Sorry. You know, this is today, Welcome to This is today the podcast that features the stories that make this day unique. It's Wednesday, august 25th 2021. I'm Russ. And here's what you need to know about today. Yeah. National banana split day today. Okay. It's here. It's happening. Uh it's not good for you. It's really, really not good for you actually. It's about half your caloric intake for the day. So if you eat a banana split, you're eating half the food that you can eat that day, which means the only other thing that you can eat is another banana split. That's it. I mean mathematically it makes sense. So if you have one for breakfast, have one for dinner or Vice verse. There you go. All should be good. There. I feel like every day over the summer is some sort of ice cream day and that's because in july it's ice cream month and then they just spill it over into august with days like this. So really all of summer is about ice cream. So enjoy ice cream this summer this fall, you'll probably pay for it or at least you'll pay for new pants. I don't know. Who am I kidding? Who wears pants these days. It's zoom. You don't need pants. I know I've talked about that before, but well I keep not wearing pants. Uh the number one question on google about banana splits is actually believe it or not. What are they made of? Can you believe people are asking that? I'm trying to answer the tough stuff here, trying to bring you trivia, trying to breathe you facts that like go deep on these subjects. And then we've got the number one question on google being what's in a banana split? For those of you that don't know, let me tell you it's a banana that's split in half with ice cream, whipped cream and just a bunch of toppings. There you go. People, I can't believe I had to tell you that. It's very disappointed. I'm assuming you know what? Here's what I'm going to assume. My listeners know better. Yeah, you guys are like above those random google searchers out there. Let's just go with that. At least I hope you are. If not. Either way, keep listening. Yeah. And tell your friends, you know what? Actually, if you could get a bunch of people that ask dumb questions like that on google to listen to the podcast, then it's a lot less work for me. I don't have to do the deep research. All right. Uh well, by the way, in case you're wondering the number two question is our banana splits healthy or not? I did answer that. So there you go. There you go. Alright. It's national 2nd hand wardrobe day as well and for those of you that don't know secondhand Wardrop was owned by someone else before. I wonder if that's the number one question. I didn't look that up. Yeah. Anyway, thrift shop Day was just days ago or a couple of weeks ago, whatever it was. But today I could talk to you about thrift shops again. But I kind of gave you a bunch of information about that instead. I'll talk to you about some online shops which I failed to do. Yeah, I didn't mention these online ones and there's some great ones out there. There's actually one called threat up and by the way, these people are not paying me to talk about them. I just found him and I thought they were cool. So I thought I'd mention them thread up. Let's say you design clothes, let's say you like to mess around with clothes or or take old clothes and make them new again. Check out this place because you can get like 25 shirts for like 28 bucks. Yeah, they're used and they're not great condition, like perfect condition, like sellable for $10 condition but you can make something cool out of them. So go check out threat up. There's also a swap dot com and D Pop pop is more of like a phone app where you can do some thrift shop shopping on your phone. So go check those out. Okay, another one today. National Park Service founders founders day, wow. I I said that went wrong because um well I was celebrating national whiskey, sour day, but we'll get into that in a second. Yeah. National Park Service founder's Day today, which means you can get into national parks for free. There you go. You can save that money for some second hand clothes or perhaps a banana split. I don't know, but you won't be spending on a national parks today. There's also some virtual experiences if you don't live near a national park and you're like, oh shoot, I just heard the podcast. It's 11 o'clock at night. I can't make it and they're all closed. Well, guess what? Virtual experiences? Go check out your local national park or that national park that you've always wanted to go check out. Go to their website because you'll probably find some cool stuff on there today. But yes, if you're listening to this at 7:00 AM, head over to one of those national parks because it is free today and why today? Well on this day in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act that created the National Park Service and you know, they would be responsible for protecting the 35 national parks and monuments. Okay, well now there's a lot more than that. Yeah, numbers have grown 419 Properties and 62 designated national parks. I can't mention them all. So go find one and go check it out today. National whiskey sour day today as I mentioned, What is that? Well, it's whiskey, lemon juice, sugar and optionally a dash of egg white. Okay, I'm gonna skip that last part, but the first part sounds pretty good. Um, it's also called a boston sour sometimes. So there you go national kiss and make up day today as well. Now I decided to talk about this one story. Stephen Colbert. Okay, he is currently, as we speak, doing an apology tour in Milwaukee after making jokes about the city on his late show. Okay, They let them like basically Stephen Colbert got to go on the field at a brewers game and like make a speech and talk to people and then they showed them all around the city. How cool is that? A tour around the city after making jokes about the city and I guess this would be his kiss and makeup tour or apology to or whatever you want to call it. The whole thing is being filmed for an episode of his show in september so here's my plan. I'm just gonna roast Milwaukee, that's what I'm gonna do because if I roast Milwaukee, then maybe they'll give me a trip and I get to go to a brewers game and I get to check them out. The only problem is I don't know anything about Milwaukee because I only know facts about good cities. Okay, let's think that'll get me a trip. Hopefully let's talk about our events and let's start in 1609. Yeah, that's way back when? Right, well Galileo galilee demonstrated his first telescope to venetian lawmakers. How do you make a venetian lawmaker? Blind? Well that's a joke anyway, Galileo Galilee demonstrated the first telescope and he didn't actually invent the telescope. No, no, no, no, no, that wasn't him. He just improved another boy. Persons design it was a dutch, glassmaker, spectacles, glasses, eyeglasses that actually invented it. But he improved it, not created it. And sometimes he gets credited for creating it on this day in 18 88. William. Seward Burroughs of ST louis Missouri received his patent for the predecessor to the calculator. It was the adding machine. Okay, so check this out. He was a bank clerk, right? He worked all these long hours reviewing the ledgers, checking them for errors and then he decided, well let me do this, let me design an adding machine to ease the monotony of my job. That's what he did. He created it now. He also created an electric alarm clock and got the patent for that in 1892. So my guess is well he got tired of waking up early. This guy is an adventure. You got alone. He just came up with something and made his life a lot easier. Yeah, sometimes think boredom just creates so many things. Right, you get bored of doing something. It's like uh I can create a way to do this and there you go. They've created it. All right, let's take a look at our birthdays for today. Uh 1930 on this day, Sean Connery was born, turning 91 today, regis filming who passed away last year was born on this day in 1931. Elvis Costello is 67 Tim Burton is 63. Billy ray Cyrus is 60 Tom Hollander is 54 Rachel bilson is 40. Blake lively is 34. That is your look at august 25th. Thanks for listening to. This is today.
