just after dawn on April 18th an earthquake tour through San Francisco. In seconds, the quake collapsed buildings, twisted cable car tracks, ruptured water mains and gas lines and toward down electric wires. Fires flared up across the city, with little water available for fighting the blazes. They burned for three days, destroying almost five square miles of buildings at the city's core. In all, 315 people were known dead and another 352 were missing.
