It was the year 1944 and on the fateful afternoon of April 14th, tragedy struck as one enormous explosion rocked the city. The source of this disaster was the British freighter. The fort STN. This ship which had arrived at the Mumbai docks just two days earlier, carried within its hold a perilous cargo. It was a deadly combination of wartime munitions and everyday supplies inside the bowls of this vessel lay 1395 tons of explosives, torpedoes, mines and shells alongside this lethal arsenal where bales of cotton barrels of oil and timber. But what added another layer of intrigue to this story was the eight lakh £90,000 worth of gold bullion, meticulously stored in 31 crates. The devastating impact of the blast was felt across the city, fiery debris and gold in gods rained down from the skies, turning the Mumbai docks into a veritable gold mine. An estimated 800 lives were lost in the wake of these two colossal explosions. With 231 of them belonging to the brave talk workers and firefighters who rushed to the scene in a desperate bid to contain the inferno. The city of Mumbai was left reeling from the shock and the scars of that day would remain etched in its memory.
