Pam Greer is no doubt one of the toughest superheroes to ever grace the screen. Her roles in many 19 seventies blaxploitation films like Coffy and Foxy Brown made her famous as an actress and an American icon. But as a black American woman, she left a legacy that goes far beyond Hollywood. Foxy Brown made her a star and a symbol of black empowerment, but as were discovered, it was a strong, independent *** kicking woman that stirred controversy. Blaxploitation films depicted black culture in a way that had never been seen before on screen, and Greer was often the titular, badass female character when this genre of film gained popularity in the seventies. But as Foxy Brown made Greer the queen of blaxploitation, she discovered it was a strong woman trait that stirred the most controversy during her career. Men were threatened by her characters, and Greer spoke out about what that revealed about inequality in society not only on jobs and pay, but expectations Moors and values between women and men. Women weren't supposed to be strong. Women were supposed to be married. They were not supposed to explore their freedoms. But Pam showed women another way she showed us that it's possible to stand out in the film industry as a woman of color amid a crowd of male hustlers, villains and superheroes.
