this mural depicts historical leaders in the African Canadian community and their accomplishments, many of them from the Windsor area. One prominent figure is Mary Shad, who was born to free parents in Delaware and settled in Windsor, where she opened an integrated school. She later went on to become the first black woman in North America to publish a newspaper, the provincial Freeman. The mural also includes Henryville, who came to Sandwich as a refuge of slavery. He and his wife, Marea, honored by a historical black beside Mackenzie Hole.
