the parent and the child relationship is not unlike a master and apprentice relationship. In that situation, there's a teacher and there's a student. And in order for this relationship to work well, the teacher has to realize that they're a teacher and the teacher has to be open to being taught by the student. You know, the teacher has to be open to being taught the best way to teach the student. You know, parenting works this way. If you're a good parent, you know, the child doesn't know that they're a student. But if the parent isn't a harmonious environment, this occurs sort of naturally and spontaneously. You know, you're really trying to civilized the child to teach it about the world. It's like if you're trying to learn karate, you know, you have to recognize that you're a student. And being a student means that if you stop the teacher every time you have a question, you're interrupting the lesson. And your mind sort of does this too. You know, you're listening to somebody talk and your mind comes up with something that doesn't agree with, and you sort of stop paying attention in order to think it through, and then before you know it, you've missed part of the lesson and it takes a real you know, it's a real skill to be ableto listen to somebody. There's a certain balance between stopping the teacher when you don't understand something and stopping them. When you disagree with something that's been set, you know, part of you has to just be able to go with the lesson and assume that there's a point that you might not understand yet. But in order to do this, you have to be patient. It's not unlike Mr Miyagi. When he's teaching Daniel, you know, he doesn't tell him what he's doing. He just says, Wash the cars, paint the fence And eventually Daniel gets impatient and he's like, What am I doing all this for? And Mr Miyagi sort of surprises him and shows him that he's been teaching him karate. And so in order to get this lesson, you got to be patient. You gotta assume that there's something worth hearing and that you might not understand it at first
