Wonderbread factory. The rusty iconic Wonderbread sign marks the spot of early Columbus's manufacturing routes. In 19 oh one, the building opened as the kneer manufacturing company moving from steel wool products to more delectable ones. In later years, it was converted into the Holland Bread Company in 1921 the Ward Brothers Bakery in 1923 and Wonder Bakeries Company in 1929. For 80 years, the sweet smell of fresh baked Wonder Bread drifted through the short north under the glowing Wonderbread sign which became a skyline fixture. Although the factory closed in 2009, the iconic sign remains as a constant reminder of the neighborhood's past role in producing an American classic. In 2012, the building underwent a new renovation into loft style apartments. Wonder Bread Lofts opened in 2013 with 66 1 and two bedroom apartments which maintain many of the original features of the bakery including exposed brick, large windows and steel beams.
