Voice Over Testimonials

I am the senior partner of a law firm; a recent office move necessitated a directory message for our new phone system. Dennis Kambury provided an excellent voice for that message. His response to our request was immediate. He delivered the finished product the same day, the service was excellent, he carefully discussed with me the pronunciations of the names in the directory message. The production quality was top-notch and he did this at a very affordable cost. I highly recommend him as a voice over professional. We will gladly use him again if and when the need arises.

Dennis worked with my client's unrealistically tight time frame and delivered a quality product that will make me as a videographer look professional. The client is going to be wowed by this video and its in large part to Dennis' resonant, confident and soothing voice.

Skill Overview

Audio Editing

As a theatrical sound designer, recording engineer, and producer, I've spent countless hours editing audio. In the early days, I worked with razor blades and reel-to-reel tape, editing music and sound effects...and have the scars to prove it! In my digital studio, I greatly expanded the scope of my editing; in addition to many small edits for many bands (and for myself), I worked with an artist who built her entire album's vocal parts, including harmonies, one measure...sometimes one note...at a time. To put that into perspective, that's about 400 edits per song, times 15 songs, or in the neighborhood of 6,000 edits on that album alone. Fortunately, it wasn't with razor blades!

Editor

Oregon Shakespeare Festival • Contract Part-time

Jan 2003 - Mar 2006

An integral part of sound design for theatrical productions is editing, sometimes live and on deadlines. In addition to the standard editing tasks in the studio — selecting sounds, setting levels, deleting extraneous sounds — theatrical sound design involves last-minute changes in the theatre, right up till the opening. Edits like this include shortening or lengthening cues; adding, deleting, or replacing sounds, even changing the pitches of instruments.

Moronic, Inc. • Freelance

Mar 2006 - Mar 2007

For Moronic, a 3D animation producer, my role as editor encompassed tasks as simple as fitting the audio to timing of action (ex., creating and frame-by-frame editing of the sound of a rock winking), or as complex as re-arranging the recording of a multitrack musical score to create additional music cues in the video.

Skill Overview

Audio Engineering

Working in my digital studio, I've engineered the sessions for many bands, from grunge rock to solo folk artists, to alternative and a cappella groups. I've also engineered numerous productions for Pacific Northwest theatres over the years, most recently the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which incorporated live foley, library sounds, plus live and prerecorded musical cues. A finished production for OSF would be a mix of sound effects, music, and singing. I also serve as recording engineer for my own albums.

Recording Engineer

Frogs Productions • Self-employed

Mar 2000 - Present

As a studio owner, a big part of the job is recording musicians, both myself and others. I pick and place mics, set levels, record both live and virtual instruments, mix the multitrack recording, and either prepare the files for mastering by a 3rd party, or master the files myself.

Sound Designer

Oregon Shakespeare Festival • Contract Part-time

Jan 2003 - Jun 2003

I was one of a few sound designers for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon; my job was to work with a composer to blend sound effects that I created with the music the composer wrote. I not only collected the sounds, but mixed the final combination in the studio and in the actual production.

Foley Effects

In my work as a theatrical sound designer for theatres in the Pacific Northwest, and work on radio shows and short-form films, I did a great deal of foley work: twisting styrofoam to make leather sounds; breaking carrot bones, crinkling cellophane to make bacon...or a crackling fire, and filtering white noise to make tap water, a waterfall, steam, a blow torch, etc. Have you ever had to make a common rock wink? I have! (Hint: brick twisted against concrete)

In fact, with a cross-country team under my direction, I put together a 5,000-sound CD library of sound effects (back in the days when multimedia was a thing). I even developed a custom interface to audition and download the sounds from CD onto one's hard drive.

Skill Overview

Sound Design

I worked as a sound designer for a number of theatres in Seattle, Washington in the early '80s, and most of all with the Group Theatre Company at the Ethnic Cultural Center/University of Washington. I worked on dozens of plays over the years doing the basic sound effects, rigging complex systems to do things that today can be done with a button push, and learning how to edit audio recorded with a reel-to-reel on mylar tape...with a razor blade and a cutting block.

In the early 2000s, I worked with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival doing sound design. One of productions I did, with composer Larry Delinger — Julius Caesar — was selected by the prestigious 2003 Prague Quadrennial to be in their very first exhibit honoring sound in theatre. I shared the bill with a dozen other producers, including Andrew Lloyd Weber and Sir Elton John.

In Ashland, I also worked with local filmmakers to do sound design and sound editing.
