One of the things I've learned from my observations is that listening to kids almost always involves stopping what you're doing at the most inconvenient times a colleague is waiting, the dinner needs cooking, or we simply have to be somewhere in a hurry. How do parents remember to stop and focus on a child in an age that pulls them in so many directions at once? It helps to remember that we have the capacity to nourish a child's belief that she is worthy of being heard. If we stop everything to listen, she will be more likely to listen to herself.
