Description

In this portion of the memoir, Chasing Tarzan, the author describes an evening of rest before the school weigh-in day and her turmoil with her school bully. My goal was the to be relatable but still express the frustration and desperation felt through her experience.

Mary's presence wasn't helping. She snored louder than dad and he could wake the dead. Dear Jesus. Make her stop, make it stop. Mary also sucked her tongue like a newly weaned baby. Even though she was six, I was 10. And since we were the only girls, we shared a bedroom and a bed, but it never felt like we were alone. Not with all the racket coming out of her nose and mouth. Sleeping with her was like laying alongside a pig trough all night long. I gulped in a lung full of air, wrapped my pillow over my head, pulled my covers on top and stuck my fingers in my ears. But the slurping and snorting, permeated, assaulting my ear drums. The battle for sleep was a nightly affair, but it was especially merciless on the eve of the worst day of the year.
