In this book, we are obviously focusing on writing a funny story as opposed to a joke, comedy or joke writing is another element of humor writing that is an entirely different monster. A joke hits hard and quick. A story winds and dines you brings you along gently and then when you're ready for that little bit of sweetness to finish off your delicious meal. There it is the ending or what I like to think of as the happy ending, you are delightfully satisfied. Still, it can be a bit daunting when you start. How am I going to get all the way from point A to point Z and keep my reader engaged.
