Chapter one, Rebecca taking a deep breath and letting it out. Slowly. Rebecca Rawlings leaned on the sink basin and stared at a reflection in the mirror. This was it. She said to no one in particular. The last chance she closed her eyes and prayed. Please let this be it. Seven years is a long time to wait for a baby. Sure. There was always adoption. But Rebecca Rawlings wanted to feel a life growing within her. She wanted a baby of her own blood. She wanted the whole morning sickness, fat feet, swollen ankle beached whale roly poly experience of being a mother for so long. She had dreamed of it. This was it the final fertility drug they had been trying for so long. If this didn't work, they were at the end of the line, both mentally and financially, she had kept this round of testing from her husband. She didn't want him to get his hopes up again and she could not stand to see the disappointment in his eyes with shaky hands. She picked up the test, she closed her eyes tight and counted to 10 and then looked again. That's a plus. She thought she picked up the test again. Tried to make her mind regroup after rechecking the test three more times. Yes. Taking another trip to the drugstore to get more tests and a very large sweet tea trying to have to pee again all three tests. Positive, positive, positive. She was gonna finally be a mom chapter two. The month leading up to the baby's arrival was full of excitement. Rebecca's mother had come to stay to be on hand to help. When the baby came, there was so much activity in the kitchen, you would swear we were hosting a large party instead of having the most important life changing. Amazing dream come true. Jason could not stop smiling. This was it. He was going to finally be a dad. Jason worked late into the evenings to build a custom crib in the most beautiful polished wood, no sharp edges, everything smooth as silk. They had a new ritual when getting ready for bed at night, Rebecca and Jason would stand together at the crib, holding each other slowly rocking back and forth and dreaming of what their precious child would look like. The nursery was ready. They had enough casseroles and pasta bakes to feed an entire football team. Rebecca liked to plan even her plans had plans. She had three bags packed for the hospital, one for cool weather because let's face it when you live in Missouri. If you don't like the weather, give it 15 minutes and it'll change. So, of course, one for the warm weather, one that has oils and salts for nausea in case she was feeling sick on the way to the hospital. Rebecca was even laughing through some of the smaller contractions. She was just so excited to finally be able to meet her baby. She had waited for this day all of her life. Now that it was here, she was almost drunk with giddiness. She squeezed her husband's hand as a rather strong contraction ripped through her traffic was slower than normal due to the late weather system laying down some freezing rain just a little bit further. She thought she could see the hospital exit if this car could just let us over. A terrible sliding scraping noise was coming from her husband's side of the car. Headlights were coming from the wrong way. Everything slowed down like a movie in slow motion only there was no filming crew here, just flashing lights in the rain, twisted metal and ice cold rain that came in from all over loud banging noises like other cars must have slid into them as well. Flashing, screaming and crying. Rebecca's mother who was in the passenger seat in the back had been impaled by some sort of pole. The truck had hit them with was carrying it killed her instantly. Rebecca's legs were crushed and her shoulder was freely bleeding from a large piece of glass embedded to the bone. The truck had lost control on the slick highway and spun into the Rawlings car. The mangled mess seemed to have missed Jason but had crushed the women between the concrete medium and the large truck. The car seemed to be folded in half. Jason trapped by his seatbelt was hanging upside down over his wife. Rebecca's eyes were too wide, showing too much weight. She was conscious but she was going into shock. Her belly was still tight with contractions but her face was not registering. I I think I'm hurt. Jason. Jason don't lose the baby. She said, where's my mom trying to stop the blood flow? There was too much blood. He began taking his shirt off and stuffing as much in the gaping holes as he could. Jason realized a crying whining sound was coming from him. The baby trying to be born was unaware of the trauma that surrounded it. The scene was horrific. Her poor body pushing and straining to get the baby out as her life, blood was leaking all over her. This can't be happening. He touched his wife's face with his bloody hand. He watched as she seemed to soften to his touch, open your eyes. He screamed, stay with me. All of a sudden a look of calm came over her face and she smiled even covered with blood and glass. She smiled the most beautiful smile at Jason, keep her safe. She said her eyes sharp and crystal clear for the moment her name is Kinsey, she will be truly special. Take care of her and tell her how much I love her. She choked as a large amount of blood came out of her mouth. Her eyes fluttered shut and Jason screamed, he was still screaming when the medics pulled him out and went to work trying to save the baby.
