I remembered fishing for the first time with my grandfather at their summer house on Lake Patera. We went early in the morning before breakfast, when the lights from the docks still shown on the reflection fog drifted over the water. I sat quietly, watching the remains of rainwater slosh around the souls of my rubber boots. In the bottom of the metal canoe, I remembered feeling afraid of my ghostly reflection, staring back at me in the water, terrified of the inky darkness below. I imagine there was no bottom, that the death just went on and on like a black hole. He'd warned me that the water was icy cold. Suddenly, he jerked his arm in the canoe rocked. He wrestled for a moment, winding and twisting, finally leaning over the edge and tossing a fish in the back of the canoe. It's laden arm's distance away from me.
