Chapter one, Sunday, December 21 2003, Davison Polytechnical University 8 30 PM. It had helped a lot to have Clara sitting in the first row of Brenda's new journalism course, Tom Wolfe, Jane Mayer and Jill Abramson, Norman mailer, Joan Didion Truman Capote. Her pink skin flushed when she was moved by an image or joke. She had refined features and expressive brown eyes, black hair that framed her face. There are students who feel need more time. Vivian said, don't you think so? Miss Conte, the kind whose sensibility calls for something extra from us, not just in the classroom, but in life, she looked to be in her mid to late thirties, but Vivian's manner and speech were those of someone older. Yes, I do think that Brenda said, please call me Brenda. And I, I think it can apply even more to students who aren't overachiever like Clara say to people like me. She looked at Gordon, I won't embarrass Doctor Poole by explaining Brenda claims I made a difference way back when Gordon said, I think she just rounded a corner and I happen to be there. A bend was definitely rounded Brenda said, but it didn't have to lead anywhere. That's all I'll say. She drank some punch. I was actually thinking of Ruth Gelb. Vivian Lash looked pointedly at her. Now that is someone I would very much like to talk with you about. Would you excuse us? Not waiting for an answer. She took Brenda's elbow and steered her away toward the window. Once there, Brenda glanced down below like a herd of glum cattle and winter, a scattering of cars huddled under security lamps. Ruth took your class too. She said they sat next to each other. Are you aware of their roommates? Yes. They, you must know she's trouble. Surprised Brenda had no answer. If I'd learned Clara had any intention of rooming with such a person, I'd have done my best to change her mind. This was said with quiet vehement as though Vivian Lash believed Ruth Gel posed a threat. I'm sorry. You feel that way. Brenda said, I'm sure you know, you're a chemistry major but I think I know Ruth Gilb, they both did well, from what I see, they support each other. She's come close to being expelled twice. Lash said once for freaking out on ecstasy at a frat party the second time for servicing a male student in the distance learning studio. I now call it not so distance learning. There was something wrong about it. Not prudish, so much as information, too private to share with someone you were meeting for the first time information in a student's private file. I wouldn't know about that. Brenda said I prefer to rely on what I see and hear. I have nothing against the girl. Vivian said, I wish her. Well, I just don't want someone special put at risk.
