The great toilet tissue tragedy of 2020, toilet paper is something we all need pretty much on an ongoing basis. The demand is constant in other words. So why was it so hard to find when the coronavirus pandemic occurred. We know a lot of people were hoarding it, stockpiling it for doomsday and all. But I mean from a supply chain perspective, what went wrong? Let me guess it's more complicated than you might think, yep, wrap your head around this. Bath tissue is fairly cheap, so it needs to be made close to where it will be purchased because if shipping costs are too high, it's no longer competitive toilet paper factories are streamlined for the kind of stable market demand. They've learned to expect. They don't have excess capacity because most of the time they don't need it, the pandemic tore all that to shreds. Suddenly we had astronomical demand. The factories couldn't easily ramp up production because they only have so many machines and people available. It seems like we should have had plenty of extra toilet paper around when schools and businesses shut down. But the packaging and distribution system for industrial toilet paper, the cheaper thinner stuff wasn't packaged for selling in places like grocery stores. So when local markets ran out of your favorite four pack, there wasn't an easy way to restock shelves, at least not as fast as all of us were emptying them when things go badly in a supply chain, it can take a minute for the system to recover, but overall supply chains are extremely resilient. We remember the breakdowns primarily because they happened so rarely, so just learn to roll with it exactly. Just wipe it from your memory. Nice one. Mhm.
