cassie jumped when a knock sounded on her door, blinking. She glanced around the room. The pieces fell into place as she remembered where she was. Two hearts. She had managed to doze off. Another knock had her fully awake. She plotted over to the door and didn't see a peephole. The building must be from before they were coming. So she pulled the curtain aside on the window beside the door. Officer Hansom was outside with a stuffed paper bag. He was raising his hand to knock again when she opened the door. I was starting to get concerned. She closed her eyes and slowly opened them. I fell asleep. I wasn't expecting visitors. He handed her the paper bag. She reached in and dug through the layers to see a pair of pants, a T shirt and a nightgown. That was thoughtful of you. She pulled at the neckline of her dress. I never planned to wear this as athletic gear. He shifted on his feet. I stabbed by my moms house. It didn't take long before she asked about the woman in the wedding dress, cassie felt her face grow heated. Did you tell her you'd seen her in person since? It wasn't part of a case I gave her details. She launched into me when she learned the poor woman was here without luggage or a change of clothes. He shook his head as though to clear the indecent from his mind when Mom isn't happy. Please thank her for me. He rolled his eyes. You can thank her yourself. She peered around him expecting to find a woman twice his age in his car, but it was empty when I told her where I had met you? She grinned. You also told her I had to buy more food. She pointed to her refrigerator. I have enough. You can tell her. I'll be fine. His eyes sparkled. You aren't from the south, are you? Indianapolis indiana. But my mother is from a small town outside of Atlanta Georgia. She says I've lived in Tennessee so long that I am southern now too interesting. He clearly wanted to ask that, but instead said, Mom loves to cook for people. She invited you to sunday dinner. He brushed his hands together as though saying it was done. There's no getting out of it, at least. No polite way to do that. He tilted his head to the side. Perhaps waiting for her to try. It wasn't enough that she was at his town's mercy for gas. Now she had to accept a dinner invitation from a stranger. Well, she'd entertained many strangers in her role as a wedding planner. This would be just one more event. The strange Nashville woman in the wedding dress would probably be the talk of this small town for the next week. She blew out of breath. Fine. What time should I be ready? He grinned. Wise Decision. Mom said to pick you up at 4:00. That's an early dinner time. It would be if we ate dinner, then we don't get many strangers. So. I think she just wants to visit with you. Eating would be easy making conversation with the small town sheriffs mother sounded more challenging, but she didn't want to be rude, especially to someone who had sent over clean clothes and a homemade dinner sounded better than something. She'd reheat. I'll see you. Then he touched the brim of his hat and gave a nod, turned and left. The good officer stirred up emotions. She didn't want to have just hours after she'd run from her fiance. Yes, he was handsome but he was also kind to his mother and cared about this town qualities she found endearing. She watched his car slowly drive thru the motel complex, turn left and leave, stepping back, she closed and locked the door. It had been lonely being in this room alone and she honestly hadn't been looking forward to a whole day of her own miserable company. So maybe this would be a good thing. Besides she'd get one more look at the sheriff before she drove out of town.
