My passions have always been very clear to me. So I'm always surprised when someone admits to me that they have no defining passions in their lives. Passions aren't hard to find if you're paying attention to your life at all, the things they're passionate about won't leave you alone. They're the ideas and hopes and possibilities. Your mind naturally gravitates to the things you would focus your time and attention on for no other reason than the doing them feels right. Passions. Air irresistible and restless. They target your sleeve, demanding your attention. It's no trick to recognize your passions. The hard part is trusting in them as an organizing principle in your life. Why is it so difficult? The problem is fear. We're afraid that following our passions makes us look impractical, ineffectual, self indulgent or even irresponsible. What if, for example, your passions draw you to an occupation that to the people around you, seems foolish or lacking in a future or doesn't offer? What they see is the necessary earning power and social prestige they expect. For me, it's another case of an illusion being mistaken for what is practical. The experiences of my life and of so many students in our school have convinced me beyond doubt of the practical power of passion to unlock our deepest potential. Denying your passions cuts you off from this power. It is the most impractical thing you could dio. Second, never think that trusting in your passion gives you any kind of free pass through life. It doesn't excuse you from unpleasant tasks. In fact, it requires you to work harder, and it inspires you to reach higher than you would in the pursuit of a more sensible ambition.
