The Solano County Fair Association encourages you all to stay strong for next year. We plan to celebrate Agday bigger and better than ever. Well maybe not that big today. We'll bring you some food filled facts of palabra de plantas and info. Your brain can chew on till the cows come home. Traditionally. Agday is a celebration of the art and science behind the agriculture industry that includes cultivating the soil, growing crops and raising livestock. It also includes the preparation of plant and animal products for people to use and for the distribution to markets worldwide. It's recorded that wild grains were collected and eaten over 100,000 years ago, but crop growing didn't start until much later and has roots in western Asia and served as a birthplace for many historic innovations including crop domestication, irrigation and many others. But crop growing didn't start until much later and has roots in Western Asia and served as a birthplace for many historic innovations, including crop domestication, irrigation and many others. Flash forward to today. Much has changed, but the flow is still the same behind the curtain of factory industrial farming. Most farms are owned by families who care and love what they do and keep that cycle going. It's a connection that harkens back to the early days of human life and shines brightly here. Solano County is located within California's Great Valley Geum or Fick province, a deep basin filled with alluvial deposits from the Jurassic to co ordinary periods that have eroded from the eastern sierra Nevada mountain range. Alluvial soil is one of the best soils requiring the least water due to its high porosity, which is the gap between solid particles Which contains water and air, and that soil flows all across our county. With over 850 farms in Solano County, you couldn't ask for a better climate and set up for the growth of plants and crops. Plants. They play a huge role in the flow of agriculture production in Solano, but even more so the huge role in the existence of animals and humans alike. For the last 7 to 10,000 years we've been growing plants for consumption purposes, but its uses go so much further. Now these days, plants serve industrial uses, medicinal uses, some as meat replacements and others serving as a plastic replacement as well. Looking at it from a big picture, it's remarkable how fast we've been able to utilize the science of agriculture to better promote our progression as a species, continuously adapting our agricultural roots. It starts with a seed, we've reached levels, our ancestors couldn't have ever thought of some of the nursery farms in solano include growing anything from christmas trees to vineyards, propagated fruit and nut trees, turf and flowers. We have amassed a list of resources you can use at home as well as additional topics you may want to research. If you're feeling like you might want to test your green thumb, you can even get started at home. Down the farmer flow, you'll run into some pesky intruders, insects, which can vary where you live and what part of the world you're located here in Solano County. We have several thousands of species of insects. Some we love to see and touch. Others were not so happy to see. There is one species, however, that makes the agricultural industry super sweet and that is apiary product production or some of that ooey gooey, deliciously delightful honey as well as other products like honeycomb and bee's wax. In 2019, Solano County Apiary products totaled value. Nearing $1.5 million. Bees also help our plants multiply by assisting with pollination. That's what they do. These can also be hired for jobs too. Farmers typically hire a bee colony to come and help properly pollinate their crops. The types of jobs are bees get hired for our almond, cherry, cucumber, melons, pumpkins, sunflowers and watermelon to name a few, luckily enough, you only need to hire the team that maintains the bee colony. We couldn't imagine asking each be to fill out a new hire packet for more information on bees, there's plenty of content on our site, including one from LJ George, which goes in depth into beekeeping, agriculture production in Solano ranked 26th statewide in 2018 and the leaders in the production of young plants or nursery stock, cattle and calves processing tomatoes, alfalfa, hay, peter, lambs, wine, grapes, milk, walnuts, dairy cows and irrigated wheat. Solano ranks in the top five counties for California production of sheep and lambs, grain corn, hay and safflower. This might be crazy to hear, but depending on where you live in Solano County, you may have never even seen a farm animal. Many kids and their families are relegated to gathering produce at grocery stores and farmers markets. The viewing of livestock animals are merely figments seen in passing or in a nursery rhyme. Thankfully, third graders in Solano County every year are invited to come to our grounds and see these animals firsthand and get an idea of what kind of hard work goes into caring for the plants and animals. Taking a break from the books and offering a unique opportunity to see the sights and the sounds and the smells Of a farm livestock animals come in all shapes and sizes in Solano. The top products include cattle, calves, sheep, lamb, poultry and a few others animal production for our county in 2019 totaled nearly $43 million. What most people don't realize is how much effort goes into raising a livestock animal a majority of the time a livestock owner raises the animal to become food for you and me, on average, you can expect a cost of $1200 to raise one calf, not to mention all the space it needs to graze and the amount of labor required to keep them happy. If you ever plan on raising a sheep, chicken or any other farm favorite, first check with your local city restrictions and ensure you have enough space because trying to raise chickens and cows without a pasture or a coupe could mean you'll end up with a new roommate In 2019, Fruits, nuts and vegetable production led the way totaling a value of over $372 million dollars from agriculture production in Solano County. The top 10 commodities include almonds, tomatoes, cattle, walnuts, hey wine, sunflower, wheat, sheep and nursery products like flowers and christmas, trees. Some of the places our products are exported to include the U. K. The Philippines, France, china, India and Mexico. Thanks to an increase of all almond orchard planting over the last two decades, almonds are solano's top grossing crop valued at a little over $55 million in a little under 20 years. Almond orchards have expanded from 1500 acres in the year 2000 to over 20,000 acres today, 14,000 of which are currently bearing the Department of Food and Agriculture projected a record harvest of £3 billion of almonds in 2020. While those calculations are currently being tallied, the demand for almonds continue to rise and several issues can influence that demand like trade policies, drought and climate change and the demand for water could all have a substantial impact in the agricultural output of Solano County.
