Hi, I'm Damien Shamir. Welcome to the veg your Source for all things vegan. Today we're gonna explore the fascinating history of veganism. The roots of veganism can be traced back to Ancient India where the concept of A Z or non harming was an integral part of the Hindu and Jain religions. In the 18 hundreds, British vegetarian societies began to emerge with some members advocating for a diet free of all animal products. The term vegan was coined in 1944 by Donald Watson who formed the vegan society in England. The society defined veganism as a way of living which seeks to exclude as far as possible and practical all forms of exploitation of and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. In the following decades, veganism gained momentum with the first vegan cookbook being published in 1960 the first vegan restaurant opening in the United States in 1975. Today, veganism has become a global movement with people choosing plant based diets for ethical environmental and health reasons. Thank you for joining me on this brief history of veganism. Join me next time for more insights into the world of plant based living.
