A casualty is considered a child from about one to about eight years of age, choking happens when the casualty suffers from a sudden obstruction in their airway. This is a serious emergency, which can lead to unconsciousness in just seconds. A casualty with mild airway, obstructions will be able to speak, cough forcefully and breathe, stand by and allow them to clear their own airway. If the casualty stops coughing cannot speak or isn't breathing, the first aider should act immediately come down to the child's level. Give five back blows, support the casualties upper body, lean them forward and deliver up to five sharp blows in rapid succession between the shoulder blades using the heel of your hand. If the casualties still cannot cough, speak or breathe, give five abdominal thrusts.
