Glenn, Abbott can feel her husband following her every move as she takes the bowl of puff pastry from the mixer and puts it into the refrigerator. The tablet sits on the kitchen table, calling to her Jake leans against the door, jamb, arms folded, blocking her retreat. What was she doing here? He asks. She's my sister. Glenn retrieves the tablet and faces him. And where did you go last night? I needed some air. I didn't hear you come in. It was late. I assumed you were in bed. Were you in your bed? Glenn doesn't take the bait. Jake is worried that she'll tell Natalie what he did last night. She can still see the stain on the wall from where he hurled a glass of bourbon before coming at her. His face twisted with rage. She nearly flinched as memories of her father had flashed through her mind, but she held her ground go someplace else, she'd said, staring him down until he put on his coat and driven away. Now she faces off with him again. I have an event today. I need to get ready. Jake doesn't move and Glen hopes that will offer an apology or even a kind word. What was that about? A computer tech? He asks, Someone posted something on my blog that scared me. He pauses a beat before responding. I'm glad Natalie's on it. Then he steps aside and Glen ducks past him and into the next room. Wide floorboards creak beneath her feet. Good luck with your event, Jake says Glenn turns to him, her palms out, her body language open no longer trapped in the kitchen. She wants to find a way to connect again. What did I do? Jake pours himself coffee and takes a long sip. You tell me I'm sorry for what? Glenn starts to say something and stops. I apologized. She says, now it's your turn. You scared the ship out of me last night and I won't tolerate violence. Not ever. When jake doesn't say anything, Glenn says up to you and heads through the house to her office in the back her sanctuary here bookshelves lined the walls along with photos of Glen with Tina and Martha and Deb Perlman and other cooks. She admires. Glenn had earned an MBA and worked as a consultant for years. Once, happy time took off. Once she had her book deal, she felt comfortable taking a chance and leaving behind the security of her job. The next few weeks will show her whether she's placed the right bet
