Welcome to a new series of cinemas. E unboxing the past. In today's episode let's unbox our humble cassette or music cassette or just the tape. In 1963 lau bench while working for the dutch electronics company Philips introduced the compact cassette in Berlin radio show for the first time. Initially it did not spark the interest but soon it wrought an unprecedented change in the music world. The cassette tape is made up of two miniature spools of tape encased in a plastic shell. The tape is made of a magnetic material that can store audio recordings. The cassette tape recording system uses a process called magnetic recording where the tape is magnetically charged and then played back by reading the magnetic impulses produced by it. Before the advent of cassettes. Radio was the popular option for a common man to listen to the music. But soon cassettes became the game changer because of its affordability, sturdiness and portability. It also became a popular choice for playback and lead to mixtape culture where people could create personalized tapes for their friends and loved ones. Although the first generation of audio Cassatt started hitting the world market in late sixties. But by mid seventies it completely swayed the music world In India. It started its journey by late 70s from films like and and held steady for more than 30 years. Big music companies like H. M. V. Was preparing itself to catch up with the demand in indian market when they separated Kasatka players took the advantage and grew so big that it established new players in the business. As the market got decentralized. New era of music enthusiasts started recording songs in their voices and thus new singles were born. Soon different types of audio cassettes started coming in the market from private albums, classical music dada dada cake Hania to devotional music. Still film music was the most popular music. The cassette started getting sold in non conventional places like pan wallahs, grocery shops or sti stalls. And by nineties India became the second largest audio cassette market next to us.
