In 1975 Lorne Michaels pitched NBC about a live late night comedy show. But unlike others, Michael Show would be edgy and topical. NBC gave him a shot, but they warned him if it fell flat, they would pull the plug over. 40 years later, SNL is one of TV's greatest institutions.
